Check the power supply with a multimeter.

Barcode scanners use a laser diode to emit a beam of light which is reflected off the barcode and read by a sensor. The laser diode requires a stable voltage supply. Laser failure can be caused by power supply issues (e.g., insufficient voltage), damaged laser diode, faulty optics, or corrupted firmware controlling the laser firing sequence. Baud rate mismatches between the scanner and host device can also prevent proper communication and error reporting. Excessive ESD (electrostatic discharge) can damage internal components.
Always handle the barcode scanner with care to avoid physical damage. Do not expose the scanner to extreme temperatures or humidity. Avoid cable strain. Use Safe Handling procedures when disconnecting/reconnecting the device. ESD can damage components; ground yourself before touching any connections.
A partially functioning laser can sometimes be revived by repeatedly triggering the scan button. If the laser diode is weak, this may temporarily increase the voltage and allow the laser to fire briefly. Also check the scanner's configuration utility on the host terminal for any settings related to laser power or scan modes. Occasionally, an incorrect configuration can cause the laser to appear to fail.
