Environmental factors can significantly impact printer performance.
Thermal printers rely on precise synchronization between the print head, paper feed stepper motor, and control logic. Positional accuracy is influenced by the printer's firmware, stepper motor calibration, and the physical condition of the print head and paper path. ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) events can corrupt firmware or damage sensitive electronics. Signal attenuation in the data cable (typically USB or serial) can lead to corrupted print commands.
Receipts exhibit misaligned printing. Specific misalignment metrics (horizontal, vertical skew) unavailable. Print quality is assumed to be otherwise normal (no fading or missing lines).
High voltage is present in the printer's power supply. DO NOT attempt any internal repairs. Ensure the printer is disconnected from the power supply before performing any cleaning or maintenance. Due to unattended public access, ensure proper grounding of the kiosk to prevent static discharge hazards.
Regularly clean the paper path with compressed air. Ensure the printer is installed in a location with adequate ventilation and protection from extreme temperatures. Implement cable strain relief to prevent damage to the data and power cables.
If the printer uses a serial connection, verify the baud rate, parity, and data bits are correctly configured in both the printer and the kiosk system. A common cause of misalignment is an incorrect baud rate causing data corruption during printing.
