Magnetic stripe readers decode data by detecting changes in magnetic flux as the card passes over the read head. The reader translates this flux into digital signals which are then transmitted to the host system, typically via USB or serial communication. Errors can arise from signal degradation (attenuation), incorrect baud rates, or electromagnetic interference (EMI). Accumulation of debris on the read head or wear on the magnetic stripe can also lead to signal misinterpretation. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can temporarily disrupt the reader's internal circuitry.
The magnetic stripe reader consistently returns an "Invalid Card Number" error despite correct card swiping attempts.
Always disconnect the device from the power source using Safe Handling (unplugging) before cleaning. Avoid using excessive force when cleaning the read head. Do not use liquid cleaners directly on the device. Static electricity can damage sensitive electronic components; use appropriate ESD precautions. Under NO circumstances should you attempt to open the card reader's casing as this will trigger anti-tamper mechanisms and permanently disable the device.
Regularly clean the magnetic stripe reader with a dedicated cleaning card. Ensure proper cable management to prevent strain and damage. Minimize exposure to electrostatic discharge by using anti-static mats and grounding straps, especially during dry winter months. Position the reader away from potential sources of electromagnetic interference, such as power supplies or other electronic devices.
Try swiping the card at a slightly different speed. Sometimes a slightly faster or slower swipe can improve the signal quality. If the reader connects via USB, ensure that USB selective suspend is disabled in the operating system's power management settings, as this can sometimes cause intermittent connectivity issues.
