The KDS relies on passive and active cooling to maintain operating temperatures. Insufficient cooling leads to CPU throttling and eventual shutdown to prevent hardware damage. Thermal paste degradation reduces heat transfer efficiency. Power supply instability (voltage ripple) can also contribute to heat generation. Static discharge events (ESD) in dry environments can cause transient faults that escalate into overheating issues. Software bugs causing excessive CPU utilization can increase thermal load.
Potential hazards include electrical shock and burns from overheating components. Always unplug the KDS from the power source before inspection or cleaning. Do not operate the KDS if it exhibits signs of physical damage or overheating. Static discharge can damage electronic components; ground yourself before touching the device. Do NOT open the device casing. This voids the warranty and will trigger anti-tamper mechanisms causing permanent damage.
Regularly clean the KDS unit's exterior with a dry, anti-static cloth. Ensure adequate ventilation around the device. Ensure stable power source.
Use a USB-powered desk fan to externally assist the KDS cooling in the short-term, or to test if increased airflow resolves the issue. Observe the external power supply (if present) for overheating. A failing external power supply can mimic internal overheating issues. Some KDS units have a 'Safe Mode' or diagnostic boot option accessible via a specific key combination during startup.
