Ethernet connections rely on consistent signal integrity across all eight wires within the cable. Signal attenuation (weakening) or electrical noise (EMI/RFI) can disrupt data transmission, leading to packet loss and disconnections. The Toast KDS relies on a stable network connection to receive order updates and communicate with the central server. Voltage fluctuations or ESD events can temporarily disrupt the network interface controller (NIC) on the KDS.
Exercise caution when handling electronic equipment near liquids. Ensure hands are dry when connecting or disconnecting cables. Avoid operating the KDS in excessively humid environments. Never attempt to open the KDS casing or tamper with internal components. This device contains anti-tamper mechanisms that will permanently disable it upon opening. Safe Handling: Unplug the power adapter from the KDS before any cable maintenance to prevent electrical shock.
Implement the following preventative measures:
• Use high-quality, shielded Ethernet cables to minimize EMI.
• Secure Ethernet cables with cable ties or clips to prevent strain and bending.
• Regularly clean the KDS and surrounding area to reduce dust accumulation, which can contribute to ESD.
• Consider using a surge protector to protect the KDS from voltage spikes.
• Periodically inspect Ethernet cables and connectors for damage or wear.
A common cause of intermittent Ethernet issues is a marginal crimp on the RJ45 connector. Even if a cable tester shows continuity, a weak crimp can cause intermittent packet loss. Re-terminate the cable ends with new RJ45 connectors using a professional crimping tool to ensure a solid connection. Consider using a short (1-2 ft) known good patch cable to isolate whether the issue is the existing permanent cable run or the KDS unit itself. A ferrite choke (EMI filter) clamped onto the Ethernet cable near the KDS might reduce interference.
