EMV/NFC card readers communicate using radio frequency identification (RFID) at 13.56 MHz. Signal attenuation, electrostatic discharge (ESD), or incorrect cryptographic parameters can disrupt communication. Incorrect terminal configuration may also prevent authorization of certain card types. Voltage fluctuations at the power supply can cause unpredictable behaviour. Baud rate mismatches are not applicable to NFC/EMV transactions.
The TD terminal is rejecting specific credit card types during transactions. Other card types might be processed successfully. The fault is intermittent, but persistent.
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage the terminal's internal components. Avoid touching the card reader's contact points directly. Ensure the terminal is grounded properly. Do not attempt to open the terminal casing, as this will trigger anti-tamper mechanisms and void any warranty. Safe Handling: Disconnect power before cleaning or inspecting cables. No Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures are required.
Regularly clean the card reader surface with a dry, lint-free cloth. Ensure proper cable management to prevent strain on connectors. Consider using a surge protector to stabilize power supply voltage. Check for firmware updates periodically.
Try clearing the terminal's transaction logs. Full transaction logs can sometimes slow down processing and cause card rejection. (Consult the TD terminal manual for the key combination for clearing transaction logs or contact TD support). A nearby cell phone or wireless device emitting strong electromagnetic interference may cause card read errors. Move these devices away from the terminal during transactions.
